Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How can I trust that products are manufactured in the country printed on the label?

All imported products must comply with strict regulations enforced by the FDA. For example, mooncakes containing egg yolks require:

  • Veterinary certificates from the exporting country’s government.
  • Import permits from the U.S. government.

These measures ensure that the entire product, including ingredients like salted duck eggs, is sourced and produced in the declared country. For example, if a product is labeled as made in Taiwan:

  • The salted duck eggs must come from Taiwan.
  • The production facility, such as one located in Taichung, must also be in Taiwan.

Additionally, the FDA conducts annual audits of warehouses, adding another layer of verification to ensure compliance.

2. What is ISO certification?

ISO Certification is a third-party endorsement that a company meets international standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These standards address:

  • Quality management
  • Efficiency
  • Environmental practices
  • Information security
  • Safety

This certification is awarded after a thorough audit and indicates the company’s commitment to excellence in operations and production.

3. What is HACCP certification?

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) Certification verifies that a company has a rigorous food safety management system in place. This system is designed to:

  • Identify potential biological, chemical, or physical hazards
  • Assess risks
  • Implement controls throughout the entire food supply chain

This certification is recognized globally in food production and processing industries.

4. What is GMP certification?

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) Certification ensures that a company follows strict manufacturing standards. It involves:

  • An independent audit of manufacturing processes, facilities, and quality control systems
  • Verification of consistent production and product quality
  • Emphasis on cleanliness, hygiene, training, and documentation

GMP certification helps ensure that products are safe, pure, and effective.

5. Why do some labels have cancer warning labels for California?

These labels are required under California’s Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. This law mandates that consumers be warned if products contain chemicals known to:

  • Cause cancer
  • Cause birth defects
  • Cause reproductive harm

While Proposition 65 only applies to California, many companies choose to label all products to avoid liability, especially with the rise of online sales.

The chemical list is maintained by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) and is updated at least once per year. The full list can be viewed here: OEHHA Chemical List

Note: California’s thresholds are more stringent than those of the FDA, meaning a product may require a warning label in California even if it is compliant elsewhere.
